NORTH STAR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSMITTER GRANT PROGRAM

 North Star
Science and Technology, LLC and American Bird Conservancy announce the
7th bi-annual North Star Science and Technology Transmitter Grant
Program. In the spirit of giving back to the research community that
they serve, North Star will award a total of eight (8) battery-powered
or solar satellite transmitters (Argos Platform Transmitter Terminals
(PTTs)), to 1-3 recipients (8 PTTs to one project or 4 PTTs to each of
two projects, or 4 to one, 2 to one, and 2 to another). PTTs are
powerful, cutting-edge tools for the study of bird migration that
greatly extend the range over which individual birds can be tracked.
The program is open to projects throughout the world. Research that
contributes to our knowledge of avian biology and that provides data
useful for bird conservation, particularly of threatened species, will
receive preference in the selection process. American Bird Conservancy
(http://www.abcbirds .org) will handle the proposal submission process,
review proposals, and select the winning projects. Please see
http://www.northsta rst.com for more information and proposal guidelines.
Deadline for proposals is February 5, 2010. Any further questions about
the program can be directed to George E. Wallace, American Bird
Conservancy (EM: gwallace@abcbirds. org; PH: 540-253-5780; FX:
540-253-5782) .

Additionally, we will start a NEW precedent with this program, which we plan to continue into the future: We will allow the winners to choose the model of PTT that they want to use from our entire line of non-GPS PTTs. This line includes solar PTTs as small as 11 grams, along with parrot tags. If you select a solar PTT or a parrot PTT this year, we will ask you to pay a nominal amount ($200-400) for each PTT to cover the additional labor required to make these. In the past, we have limited our program to our battery PTTs, but we feel that this policy is too limiting.

уникальные данные по миграции кобчиков с помощью 5г передатчиков, пардон, что на английском, получил по подписке новостей BirdLife   Falcons rally to Africa with the world’s smallest satellite
transmitters.
This summer, researchers of MME/BirdLife Hungary (BirdLife in Hungary) have tagged 8 adult female Red-footed Falcons Falco vespertinus with the world’s smallest satellite transmitters. The miniature Platform Transmitter Terminals (PTT), weighing only 5 grams, allowed fragile Red-footed Falcons weighing 130-200 grams to be fitted with these state of the art devices for the first time ever. These backpack mounted transmitters may provide location data with some 150 m accuracy, aiding the identification of precise migration routes or major stop-over sites along flyways. Beside the location and extent of wintering grounds, the precision also allows to map roosting sites at their winter quarters. The exact location of their wintering grounds so far was an absolute ornithological mystery!
Within a month after a well orchestrated departure, most birds arrived to southern Africa, and are now roaming in Southern-Angola. Heni, the fastest female, covered 7000 km in just 16 days! It was a real “falcon rally” as they crossed the Mediterranean Sea and the Sahara in 3 days, sometimes flying day and night. Researchers are now looking for funds to follow their birds with an inland expedition to survey precise habitat use and assess possible threatening factors for Red-footed Falcons in their wintering grounds.
MME/BirdLife Hungary has been working in a long-term partnership with the Hungarian National Park Directorates for the conservation of Red-footed Falcons. Their work was co-financed by the EU’s LIFE Nature fund. For more information and maps, visit the project’s website at www.falcoproject.hu

Satellites track Redfooted

Satellites track Redfooted Falcons into Africa

Since the first Hobby Falcons were tracked into southern Africa last season, technology has now advanced to the point that we are now in the position to track some of the most exciting migrations found in the raptor world.  These are the migration routes of the Lesser Kestrel, Amur Falcon and Redfooted Falcons.  These species migrate from the northern hemisphere into southern Africa, where their movements are not well known.

The first to use this new technology are the research group from Hungary who have put transmitters on a number of female Redfooted Falcons in Hungary, just before their departure from Europe to southern Africa.  These birds can be tracked in almost realtime by anyone with access to the internet by looking at the Google-based map (Map of Redfooted Falcon migration).
